Redemptor Hominis: Prémices
07/01/09 || Kampfar
Redemptor Hominis is the debut encyclical of Pope John Paul II, and I bet every word of it to be utter nonsense, just like every seconds worth of this fucking piece of garbage I’m about to review very likely is. Very likely, because I haven’t heard it yet. See, I was unable to find this lot and their release anywhere on the interweb, and in addition the GD server is down at the moment, hence why I’m left guessing. So then, will prejudice rule supreme, or am I about to get me a smack in the teeth? Fuck, what I’m building up to here is almost as exciting as cricket, on radio.

And the answer is, drum-roll and tata: Kampfar the clairvoyant strikes close to bullseye, that with a loud and convincing thud. Ok, enough bullshit, about time I tie up, dissect and get rid of this barely walking corpse already. Toothless, tame, pretto and lame, sums the whole shebang up pretty well, but since everything isn’t absolute shit, some bits of actual talent present, it won’t do. Fuck, damn, shit, oh well, here goes.
The first couple of seconds might lead you to believe that we are dealing with yet another lo-fi though not very grim black ensemble here, – not that this is an ensemble, more a one-man-band with hired nuns on vocals – but that assumption is shot to shit when a change of pace and some mumbling suddenly appears. Yep, artsy-fartsy bullshit which, while executed ok enough, gels with the black metal bit not very well at all. Think KKK dude attending Black Panther event. Think fucking mismatch. And the few death metal-ish riffs present, -ish only because of the anorectic production, isn’t much to write home about either.
So, what exactly is here to write home about? Well, the extreme vocals aren’t totally ass and the instrumentation could have been far, far worse. Even so, quite ordinary, non-lethal black heavily spiced with mildly stinking cheese, and a couple of death riffs, is all you’ll get if you give “Prémices I-IV” a go.
Don’t.
